1. Starting Conditions (Before the Project)

Perhaps one of the best stages of building a new hardscaping oasis is the phase focused on planning how structural elements would interact with the property layout! From elevation changes to functionality and future landscaping, our first goal is to always help homeowners with the planning phase of their space.

In the case of this Rincon home, the backyard had no existing outdoor living area or landsacping, aside from a small concrete grill slab. Overall, the space lacked seating or gathering areas, and the homeowners wanted a functional patio connected to the house that they could enjoy!

One concern we wanted to address was grading and drainage, which is always required before installing patios and other hardscape features.

2. Hardscaping Design & Planning Phase

After figuring out the homeowners’ vision during a rough on-site layout planning session, our team here at Coastal Hardscapes went into design mode and mapped out both the pergola placement and the patio footprint, designed around the pergola layout.

In our structural renderings, we consider elevations for proper grading and drainage, the exact patio square footage for paver material selection, and the pergola’s structural elements. These aspects are essential for making structural decisions that support the long-term durability of the outdoor living area! During the design process, we kept in mind that the goal was to create a complete outdoor living area rather than adding features separately.

We always want our clients to feel fulfillment and joy when they sit on a brand new patio or enjoy a glass of wine with their significant other and family!

4. Patio Construction Sequence & Pergola Installation Process

Once the plans are outlined, the design is complete, and the materials are selected, the construction phase begins! When we are completing any hard-scaping project in Southeast Georgia, we have to take into consideration soil conditions, erosion, and weather.

Keep reading to see how we built the pergola structure, followed by the patio and garden wall for this home in Rincon!

Step 1: Pergola Structure Installation

Rincon, Georgia | Pergola, Paver Patio & Seating Wall Installation

Our first step with any new permanent pergola structure is to figure out the size, then identify the post locations relative to the home. We have to factor in the size and any decline, but just as important as the rear elevation is the permanent fixture to the actual home. For this pergola, the homeowner wanted to install a metal roof (the final step of the project).

The Rincon pergola is built with pressure-treated lumber, and in the picture, you can see how the framing is intentionally left open to allow flexibility for future cover options. A permanently fixed pergola will last longer and require less maintenance than movable pergolas you can buy at local big-box stores.

We build the patio around the pergola so it can be fixed in the ground, but before we build any paver patio, we must first address the base, which is step two below!

Step 2: Patio Preparation & Base Installation

In the case of this paver patio in Rincon, the area was excavated and graded after the pergola installation, which was unique given the patio’s multiple elevations. The area next to the house was elevated, so we raised it, factoring in drainage. However, we also had to dig down for the patio’s step-down portion. Once we were done excavating, we added base materials, which were compacted before installing pavers. Working with a professional hardscaping contractor in Ricon is vital to ensure the base is set properly. Without this crucial step, durability and drainage issues can come fast and frequently!

Step 3: Retaining / Seating Wall Construction

Rincon, Georgia | Pergola, Paver Patio & Seating Wall Installation

One of the best upgrades for a new patio is a garden wall (retaining wall) where you can sit or plant for both appeal and functionality. For this paver patio project in Rincon, GA, we installed a durable segmental garden wall system to manage the natural grade transition in the backyard. The wall not only provides structural support but also doubles as comfortable seating for outdoor gatherings, with a place to add plants. It clearly defines the patio’s edge, creating a polished outdoor living space that is both functional and inviting for family and guests, but adds depth and resale value!

Step 4: Paver Patio Installation

If we asked you what step the paver installation is out of five, would you have guessed step four? It is quite eye-opening for most of our clients how much work goes into getting to the point of installing the actual paver stones!

In this project, the paver system installed within the pergola footprint created a durable, visually appealing foundation for the outdoor living area. Clean transitions were carefully built between the home and patio to ensure a seamless flow from indoor to outdoor space, an element we always factor. After installation, the entire surface was properly compacted and finished to provide long-term durability, stability, and a polished look that complements the overall design of the backyard retreat in Rincon, GA.

5. Completed Outdoor Living Space

The finished design created a welcoming backyard gathering space built for relaxation and entertaining. A shaded pergola provides a comfortable place to unwind, while the durable paver patio offers ample seating and space for outdoor meals. The seating wall manages grade changes and doubles as extra seating for guests. Surrounding planting zones soften the hardscape and add natural beauty, transforming the area into a true outdoor living extension of the home. The space now functions as a true outdoor living extension of the home, and the homeowners later had us help install a metal roof to provide more shade and comfort!

6. Client Experience & Design-Build Process

Rincon, Georgia | Pergola, Paver Patio & Seating Wall Installation

Rather than a standard installation, this hardscaping project followed a guided design-build approach, which is our favorite way to do things here at Coastl Hardscapes! This process takes more time, but for us, client collaboration is vital!

Patio & Pergola Client Collaboration Highlights

  • Layout discussions held on-site to visualize the space
  • Key design decisions reviewed together
  • Homeowners provided options rather than rushed decisions
  • Project sequencing allowed flexibility as construction progressed
  • One point of coordination managed structure, grading, and hardscape

Our process ensures the final outdoor space matches the homeowner’s vision while maintaining structural integrity and functionality. The last thing you want to do is pay a significant price for a new patio and then not like it! That is why we include you in the design process!

The Final Word on this Rincon Patio and Pergola:

In summary, this project had countless hardscaping features, and here is the summary of this outdoor living construction project completed by Coastal Hardscapes of Georgia:

Bonus: Why Pergolas and Paver Patios Work So Well in Coastal Georgia

Outdoor living spaces in Savannah, Rincon, Pooler, and the surrounding coastal Georgia region need to handle heat, humidity, rain, and long outdoor seasons. That’s why pergolas and paver patios are one of the most popular combinations for backyard upgrades in this area.

Built for Long Coastal Summers

Coastal Georgia homeowners spend a lot of time outside thanks to the region’s long warm seasons and mild winters. A pergola creates partial shade and visual structure, allowing homeowners to enjoy their patio comfortably even during hot summer afternoons. It also creates a natural gathering area for outdoor dining, relaxing, or entertaining guests.

Paver Patios Handle Coastal Soil Conditions

Unlike poured concrete slabs, interlocking paver patios perform well in areas with sandy or shifting soil. Individual pavers can flex slightly with ground movement, allowing water to drain through the joints and helping reduce cracking and long-term structural issues.

Designed for Outdoor Living

When paired together, pergolas and patios create a true outdoor living room behind the home. The pergola defines the space overhead, while the paver patio provides a durable surface for furniture, fire pits, or outdoor kitchens.

Flexible for Future Upgrades

Another advantage is long-term flexibility. Pergolas can easily support future additions such as:

  • Shade covers or retractable canopies
  • Outdoor lighting or ceiling fans
  • Privacy screens or climbing plants
  • Mounted heaters or outdoor entertainment features

This allows homeowners to start with a strong foundation and expand the outdoor living space over time.

Perfect for Coastal Georgia Homes

For homeowners throughout the Savannah and Rincon area, pergolas and paver patios strike the perfect balance between style, durability, and function. They create shaded gathering areas while standing up to the climate and soil conditions common across coastal Georgia properties.

When installed correctly, this combination transforms an open backyard into a comfortable, long-lasting outdoor living space that feels like a natural extension of the home.
