Creating Functionality & Privacy with a Patio and Perogla in Guyton

When the homeowners for this recent project came to the team here at Coastal Hardscapes, they had a problem they wanted to address: privacy and functionality in their backyard. 

Seated within a neighborhood with a road behind their home, their backyard was simply not enjoyable due to the lack of privacy. Enjoying the family BBQ or watching the sunset in Georgia isn’t pleasant without a seating area and a road where onlookers can see everything. 

Here at Coastal Hardscapes, we don’t just build patios; we design functional living spaces for your entire outdoor space. After evaluating the site conditions and walking through the design and planning process, we were able to generate the following plan: 

1. Paver Patio Installation – for functionality and enjoyment 
2. Raised Seating / Garden Wall (Masonry) – designed to conceal a seating area and provide seating 
3. Decorative Pergola – to continue to add more privacy, but also shade and comfort 
4. Vinyl Privacy Fence Installation – pending HOA approval for spring installation, goal is more privacy from the road

Here is how we made this vision come to life (hint: keep reading below)!

1. Assess Property Conditions and Planning Phase

Every successful outdoor living project here at Coastal Hardscapes starts with understanding your property, and more importantly, your vision. For the Guyton family, the backyard already included an existing concrete patio. Rather than remove it, we evaluated how it could be incorporated into a larger, more functional design with a new patio and sitting area. We walked through the planning phase with the homeowner and determined a vision for their backyard. 

During the planning phase, we always coordinate closely with the homeowner to understand privacy goals, traffic flow, and how the space would actually be used day to day. Because the neighborhood is governed by an HOA, fencing requirements were reviewed early in the process. By planning ahead and strategically phasing the work, we ensured construction could move forward smoothly while remaining compliant with community guidelines.

Once the planning phase is complete, the next step is to pick out the ideal paver materials for their hardscape project! 

2. Pick paver and garden wall materials

Which pavers are the best for your patio?

The answer depends on factors such as budget and style, but material selection plays a major role in how an outdoor space looks, performs, and ages over time. For this project, we helped the homeowner choose the highest-quality concrete pavers for the patio due to their durability, clean appearance, and low maintenance. Concrete pavers also allowed us to stay budget-conscious without sacrificing long-term performance; however, we always point out that cheaper pavers tend to have less concrete and larger aggregate. 

For the raised seating and garden wall, we recommended installing a masonry wall system to provide strength, visual definition, and versatility. This system allowed the wall to function as both a seating area and a planting bed. Every material choice was guided by how the space would be used, how it would hold up to Georgia’s climate, and how it would complement the home’s exterior for a cohesive, polished finish.

After the planning and material phases are complete, the real work begins! 

3. Install paver patio in Guyton

Installing new patios is where the fun begins, and after all the planning and materials are finalized, construction begins! Everything starts with proper excavation and grading to ensure water moves away from the home and the patio stays level over time. With Guyton thunderstorms and downpours, it is vital to always consider stormwater in design and installation.  When creating the base, we used a compacted aggregate base, and bedding sand was installed to create a strong foundation for the pavers.

Each paver was carefully placed to maintain consistent spacing, clean lines, and a smooth walking surface. Because of the size of this Guyto,n patio, our edge restraints consisted of concrete, and joint stabilization materials were added to prevent shifting and movement. As you can see in the photos above, the finished patio instantly expanded the usable outdoor space, creating a defined area for seating, grilling, and entertaining. 

With the patio complete, we shifted our efforts to building a masonry wall and seating area infused with a garden bed and a wooden pergola! 

4. Custom paver seating/retaining garden wall

Retaining walls, garden beds, and seating combined into one can add functionality and depth to any hardscaping project! For this Guyton homeowner, to enhance both the function and privacy of their backyard, we built a raised seating and garden wall using a masonry wall system. This feature was designed with a dual purpose in mind. 

• On one side, it provides comfortable built-in seating for gatherings and family time.
•  On the other hand, it serves as a raised garden bed that adds greenery and visual separation from the road behind the property (They plan on installing plants within the wall) 

To make this happen, we, of course, started with proper base preparation. We have to factor in that internal drainage ensures the wall remains stable and performs well in the long term. Additionally, in the planning phase, we wanted to ensure the height and placement of the paver wall were carefully planned to define the space without making the yard feel closed in. 

When it was done, the garden wall became a key design element, creating structure, privacy, and flexibility all in one clean, cohesive feature, as you can see in the photos. 

5. Wooden Pergola Construction

Before building the garden wall, we installed the wooden pergola because the homeowner wanted it incorporated into the wall. We helped create this to add comfort and more privacy. A decorative wooden pergola can add shade, depth, and additional privacy while also being friendly on the budget! 

Built from pressure-treated lumber, this pergola measured approximately 8 feet by 6 feet and is a non-load-bearing structure. While it doesn’t fully block sunlight, it provides filtered shade and a strong visual focal point within the backyard.

Evenly spaced rafters and lattice create balance, texture, and partial screening from the road behind the property. The pergola helps define the seating area as its own outdoor “room,” making the space feel intentional and inviting. It also offers future flexibility for adding string lights, outdoor décor, or climbing plants, enhancing both atmosphere and usability.

6. Vinyl Fence Guyton for future privacy 

The last phase of this total backyard overhaul that will complete the homeowner’s privacy goals is a vinyl privacy fence. This aspect will be the last phase for future installation pending HOA approval. The plan includes approximately 192 linear feet of fencing, complete with corners and a walk gate. Vinyl was chosen for its durability, clean appearance, and low-maintenance performance — ideal for coastal Georgia conditions. Because HOA approval timelines can vary, the fence installation was intentionally scheduled as a separate phase. This allowed all other project components to be completed without delay while remaining fully compliant with neighborhood standards.
