Richmond Hill Hardscaping & Patio Project

We always start with the vision of the homeowner! Whenever we design and install a hardscaping project, our first goal is to catch your vision, followed by adding functionality to the spaces.

Below, we will walk you through each phase we took to help this Richmond Hill family improve their existing patio. Unfortunately, the prior patio was installed incorrectly, and over time, erosion and the base around the shed led to cracks, crumbling, and aesthetic issues.

With the functionality gone, our first step was to help this family with a comprehensive plan that factored in past issues and new solutions for their paver walkway. The design and planning phase was vital for connecting their driveway to their patios and shed, and for creating functionality!

Step 1: Patio Site Conditions & Planning

Richmond Hill is a low-lying area, so this hardscaping project required careful planning due to elevation changes and existing landscape features. We had to factor in the low-lying marsh area at the rear of the property, the shade from the trees, and the existing patio failures.

Everything within the design phase at Coastal Hardscapes starts with proper grading and base preparation, which are critical to ensuring structural integrity and water management. However, in this particular patio project in Richmond Hill, the trench drain along the outer edge of the patio, near the shed, was key.

Here are some of the key planning considerations we took into consideration:

  • Excavation and grading for patio and walkway areas, removal of the old patio materials
  • Elevation management to support retaining wall placement at the rear of the lower-lying property space
  • Layout design to connect the patio, fire pit, and walkways seamlessly from the driveway to the very rear of the home
  • Design and factoring in a fire pit and retaining wall

The final design included architectural renderings that would not only maximize the outdoor space but also add aesthetics and functionality for the family here in Richmond Hill.

Step 2: Picking Paver Materials

For most homeowners designing a new patio or walkway, the fun really starts when they pick their paver materials!

For the patio and walkway, the homeowners chose concrete pavers, known for their durability, low maintenance, and slip resistance! For the masonry fire pit system, they selected the Palmetto fire pit kid which includes heat-resistant materials to help with smoke and safety. Lastly, the segmental retaining wall block system matched the patio’s light brown and tan colors with a harvest blend wall and a lighter gray cap, similar to the border around the walkway/patio areas.

Step 3: Installation of Patio, Walkway, Firepit & Retaining Walls

This Richmond Hill hardscaping project was designed with intentional flow, starting with a paver walkway installed along the left side of the home. The goal of this walkway was to guide foot traffic smoothly from the front of the property around to the backyard, creating a natural transition into the main patio space located just outside the screened-in porch.

From the primary patio area, a secondary paver walkway extends toward the left side of the shed, connecting to an additional patio zone featuring a built-in fire pit and retaining wall. This layout creates multiple defined outdoor living areas while maintaining clear, functional pathways between each space, with about 1,000 square feet of pavers installed.

By linking the walkways and patios together, the design improves accessibility, encourages movement throughout the yard, and allows each feature to feel connected rather than isolated. The result is a cohesive outdoor living environment that supports entertaining, relaxation, and everyday use.

Our installation process followed a proven timeline and structure to ensure durability, proper drainage, and long-term performance, including:

  • Removal of existing materials where required
  • Excavation to proper depth for patio and walkway areas
  • Aggregate base installation and mechanical compaction
  • Bedding sand leveling for accurate paver placement
  • Paver installation and precision leveling
  • Edge restraint installation for long-term border security
  • Joint sand application and compaction to lock pavers in place

Navigating Patio Issues

The biggest problem these Richmond Hill homeowners had with their previous patio was that it was not installed on solid ground. That, coupled with the stormwater management and low-lying water issues, was causing drainage issues.

This approach to correcting this issue started with elevation management from the house to the shed, factoring in the proper slope and water runoff. Ultimately, a stormwater trench drain was installed near the shed to help prevent and address water pooling during heavy rains.

Stormwater Management: Patio Trench Drain Installation

The issue with this yard is its low-lying nature and the marshy area at the rear of the property (as shown in the photos in this article).  This meant the team here at Coastal Hardscapes had to address this issue to prevent water pooling and runoff toward the structure. To do this, proper grading was vital, but a trench drain system was also installed along the shed and patio edge to help with runoff.

A trench drain captures surface water during heavy rainfall and directs it away from the hardscape and foundation areas, helping protect both the patio base and adjacent structures – in this case, the patio, shed, and fire pit. This was vital for these homeowners because sudden storms and high rainfall totals can quickly overwhelm flat surfaces.

Trench Drain Features:

  • Linear trench drain installed along the shed and patio transition
  • Integrated into the paver system for a clean, low-profile finish
  • Designed to move stormwater away from the patio and structure
  • Helps reduce erosion, standing water, and long-term base failure

By incorporating drainage into the build from the beginning, the project ensures long-term performance, protects the investment, and keeps the outdoor space usable even after heavy rain.

The Patio Richmond Hill is Talking About!

Ok, maybe we are being a bit bragadcouciosu but the completed Richmond Hill paver patio resulted in a polished, functional outdoor living space designed for year-round enjoyment. The paver patio and fire pit create a central gathering area, while the walkways and retaining wall improve accessibility, structure, and curb appeal, and address standing water and stormwater issues.

If you’re considering a paver patio, walkway, or outdoor living upgrade in Richmond Hill, don’t guess; plan it right from the start. Contact Coastal Hardscapes today to schedule a design consultation and see how proper grading, drainage, and thoughtful layout can transform your backyard into a space built to last.

FAQ: How much does a paver patio cost in Richmond Hill, GA?

The cost of a paver patio in Richmond Hill typically ranges from $15,000 to $35,000, depending on several key factors. Pricing is influenced by patio size, paver material selection, design complexity (curves, borders, and patterns), site conditions, drainage requirements, and whether features such as walkways, fire pits, retaining walls, or trench drains are included.

Homes in low-lying areas or properties that require additional grading and stormwater management may fall toward the higher end of the range, as proper base preparation and drainage are critical for long-term performance. The best way to determine accurate pricing is through an on-site consultation that considers layout, elevation, and design goals.
