We are so excited to share this project with you, where we helped an incredible couple—and their cute doggy—completely revamp their backyard patio and transform it into an outdoor oasis! Complete with a custom walkway seamlessly connecting the front to the back, a fire pit built into the patio, and a covered seating area with a wooden pergola – this project turned out amazing!

Elevating Outdoor Living in Westbrook of Savannah Quarters
In the heart of Savannah Quarters’ Westbrook community in Pooler, GA, this project brought together elegance, functionality, and coastal charm. The amazing homeowners, with busy professional careers, wanted an outdoor space that felt inviting and refined while remaining low-maintenance and pet-friendly (they had to make sure the doggy-door entrance was on point).
The team here at Coastal Hardscapes of Georgia delivered a complete transformation—taking the design from 3D renderings to a fully finished retreat that blends seamlessly with the home’s architecture. As you will see, transforming a sunken DIY patio into an outdoor oasis was terrific, and the homeowners were delighted!

Patio & Outdoor Living Design Goals: Functionality & Elegance
The goal for this project was to connect the home’s front landscaping with a fully usable backyard by replacing the old patio/landing spot. The challenge with this design was to address practical issues—like mud, drainage, and trash storage—while enhancing the property’s aesthetic appeal so the owners could also enjoy the view of the pond behind their home!
As we walked through the design process that goes beyond just picking pavers, every choice was intentional, ensuring the new hardscape was both practical and added curb appeal. Our goal was to integrate the front and side of the home into the backyard patio and fire pit.
Since this Westbrook home overlooked a water feature in their community, we wanted to ensure their seating area was built to enjoy the serenity of their backyard, so we helped design a custom pergola with a step-down sitting area!
Step 1: Front-Side Walkway – Beauty and Purpose
Along the left side of the home (from the street), a custom paver walkway was installed to create a clean, practical path that matched the home’s exterior tones—infusing this walkway with the front porch area and landsacping created a cohesive and flowing look. Within the walkway, we created a discreet, functional area for trash cans that didn’t sacrifice style. The chosen pavers complemented the property’s color palette, adding a refined texture that sets the tone for the rest of the space.

Step 2: Backyard Transformation: Elevated Patio and Built-In Fireplace
Prior to the Coastal Hardscapes team installing the outdoor living area for this Savannah Quarters home, the backyard had a small patio area outside the door that was overgrown. The backyard now features an elevated paver patio spanning the entire width of the home with a step down and fire pit!
This raised design solved a central pain point—mud and debris from the yard being tracked inside through the doggy door—by creating a solid, clean surface that blends beautifully with the home’s foundation. The retaining wall not only adds beauty but also provides functionality through drainage and water mitigation around the home’s exterior.
In the corner, a built-in fireplace adds vertical perspective and a warm focal point for gatherings and quiet evenings alike. The design balances form and function, giving the family and their pets a space they can enjoy year-round.
Step 3: Mid-Patio Step Down: Seamless Multi-Level Design
We always take functionality into account, along with creating unique spaces designated for enjoyment and hosting, in our outdoor design areas. At the midpoint of the patio, a single step down leads to a comfortable seating area, creating a multi-purpose feel.
This subtle elevation change adds visual interest and separates lounging and dining zones without interrupting the flow of the design. It also enhances natural water drainage, ensuring the patio remains beautiful and functional through Savannah’s rainy seasons.
Step 4: Install Custom Pergola in Westbrook
Anchoring the lower section of the patio is a custom wooden pergola designed for comfort and charm. We love adding pergolas to our designs and enhancing the comfort with some modern upgrades like electricity. Complete with a ceiling fan and integrated lighting, it creates a shaded oasis perfect for summer afternoons and evening entertaining. Fresh landscaping wraps the area, softening the hardscape with lush greenery and framing the pergola as the backyard’s true centerpiece.

Final Reveal: A Westbrook Outdoor Oasis
Every element of this build was engineered for durability and long-term beauty. With nearly 20 years of hardscaping experience, Miguel (me) and the Coastal Hardscapes team ensured that the base preparation, drainage systems, and material selections were ideally suited to Savannah’s coastal climate. The pavers were sealed to resist fading, and the installation techniques prevent movement or cracking despite shifting soil and humidity. It’s craftsmanship designed to last for decades.
What was once a plain, uneven yard is now a whole outdoor living space designed for relaxation, entertaining, and everyday enjoyment.
