Looking for a Pergola Contractor Near You?

A pergola can completely change how your patio, backyard, and outdoor space feel without fully enclosing them! That in-between look you are after is made possible when you connect a new wooden pergola to your patio and home, or even tie into your existing screened-in porch area.

When it comes to the Savannah sun, adding a pergola gives you the flexibility of an open-air outdoor living space and lets you customize it with shades, fans, lights, and more! Here at Coastal Hardscapes, we can help tie your new pergola into existing landscape features to completely redesign your backyard, and we can add a patio, fire pit, and landsacping for you while we are at it!

In addition to the custom pergolas we build here locally, we can add other outdoor living features including;

  • Custom wood pergolas
  • Pergolas over concrete patios
  • Pergolas over paver patios
  • Patio and pergola combinations
  • Freestanding backyard pergolas
  • Pergolas connected to outdoor living areas
  • New concrete patio construction
  • Paver patio installation
  • Outdoor living design
  • Backyard drainage improvements
  • Landscaping around the finished patio

While this list is a bit lengthy, we want to emphasize that our goal is not to add four posts and some lumber to your backyard and call it a pergola. Here at Coastal Hardscapes of Pooler, Richmond Hill, and Savannah, we want to add a space you can enjoy the warm summer and cool fall under a beautiful sunset year-round!

Why Add a Pergola to Your Backyard?

Sometimes Savannah homeowners ask us why they should add a pergola alongside a new garden wall and patio, and we always tell them the same thing: partial shade and the feeling of an outdoor room!

Unlike a fully enclosed structure – think of a screened-in porch – a pergola still allows for plenty of natural light and airflow; however, it gives you the defined space to add outdoor seating and hosting spots. The visual separation does wonders when you are looking to separate outdoor seating or dining areas from the rest of the yard, for example.

A new pergola can create patio shade, or even full shade if you cover it, extend your living space, and much more! Whether you want to spruce up a concrete patio or add to your new paver patio installed by us, here are the benefits of a new pergola:

Benefits of Custom Pergolas in Pooler & Savannah:

For many Savannah and Pooler homeowners, a pergola offers a nice balance between an uncovered patio and a fully enclosed outdoor structure. It adds shade, definition, and character while keeping the backyard open and connected to the surrounding landscape.

Pergola BenefitWhat to Consider
Adds partial shadePergolas are designed to reduce direct sun while keeping the space open and airy. For homeowners wanting even more shade, the design can often be adjusted with tighter spacing or additional shade features.
Creates a defined outdoor living areaA pergola helps an open patio feel more like an intentional outdoor room without fully enclosing the backyard.
Keeps airflow movingUnlike a fully covered structure, pergolas allow coastal breezes to move through the space, which can be especially nice in Savannah and Pooler.
Enhances the look of a patioThe structure adds height, character, and architectural interest to concrete or paver patios that might otherwise feel unfinished.
Works well with screened porchesPergolas can create a natural transition from an existing screened porch into a more open backyard entertaining area.
Great for entertainingThey help define a space for outdoor furniture, dining areas, grilling, or gathering with family and friends.
Customizable to the homeSize, placement, materials, and layout can be designed around the house, patio, landscaping, and the homeowner’s intended use of the space.
Can be part of a larger backyard projectA pergola can be planned alongside a new patio, drainage improvements, fire pit, outdoor kitchen, landscaping, or other hardscaping features.
Fits Coastal Georgia outdoor livingWith Savannah’s long outdoor season, a pergola can make a backyard more usable and inviting throughout much of the year.

The Coastal Hardscapes Pergola Process

paver patio installation rincon ga

We want building a new outdoor living space to be exciting, not overwhelming so we make the process of outdoor living design simple. From the moment we meet until we install your pergola and patio, we are with you every step of the way!

1. Tell Us Your Vision of Your New Pergola

We start by learning what you want to change about your Savannah area backyard. Maybe you already have a patio that needs shade, or you may be starting with an open lawn and want us to design the entire outdoor living area; either way, we can help you with design and your budget in one fell swoop!

2. Design Your Outdoor Space

We evaluate the property and look at how the pergola will work with the patio, house, drainage, landscaping, and surrounding yard.

For larger outdoor living projects, we can also use design renderings to help you visualize the finished backyard before construction begins. This is especially important for your home’s structural integrity and value!

3. Plan the Pergola Installation

Once the design is established, we determine materials, dimensions, site preparation, drainage needs, and the construction sequence.

If we are installing a new patio underneath the pergola, both portions of the project are coordinated since we often install the footers and pergola posts before the patio! This is why we recommend you do both at the same time too!

4. Build Your New Outdoor Living Area

Our team here at Coastal Hardscapes completes the installation and works through each part of the project until the patio and pergola come together as a finished outdoor space that you can enjoy and call your “outdoor home.” To learn more book a consultation below:

How much does hardscaping cost?

Hardscaping costs can vary widely depending on the materials used, design complexity, region, and labor costs. On average, hardscaping projects can range from $15 to $50 per square foot but can go higher for more intricate or high-end materials. Labor typically constitutes 50-70% of the total cost. The project’s complexity (e.g., elaborate patterns, leveling, grading) will increase labor costs and add fire pits, retaining walls, built-in seating, and more. At Coastal Hardscapes, we offer custom pricing packages that can fit your budget!

Pergola Installation FAQ

1. How much does it cost to build a pergola in Savannah or Pooler?

A professionally built pergola in the Pooler and Savannah area typically costs $2,500 to $11,000, depending on size, materials, design, and site conditions, with some costing as low as $1,500.

The cost of a pergola in Savannah or Pooler depends on its size, materials, design, site access, post and foundation requirements, and whether it is being built with a new patio or other outdoor living improvements. Larger custom pergolas and projects requiring concrete, pavers, drainage, or additional site preparation will cost more than a simple stand-alone structure. Coastal Hardscapes evaluates the property and provides pricing based on the actual project design.

2. Can you build a pergola over an existing concrete patio?

Yes, a pergola can often be installed over or adjacent to an existing concrete patio. Before construction, the existing slab, pergola dimensions, post locations, drainage, and surrounding property should be evaluated. In some situations, additional footings or preparation may be required to properly support the structure.

3. Can you build a patio and pergola at the same time?

Yes. Building the patio and pergola as one project can make it easier to coordinate the pergola posts, patio dimensions, drainage, furniture areas, and overall backyard layout. Coastal Hardscapes can design and install both features as part of a complete outdoor living project.

4. Do pergolas provide shade?

Yes, pergolas provide partial shade while allowing light and airflow through the open roof structure. The amount of shade depends on the pergola design, orientation, spacing of the overhead members, and time of day. They are a popular option for homeowners who want some relief from the sun without completely covering or enclosing a patio.

5. Are pergolas good for Savannah’s climate?

Pergolas work well in Savannah and coastal Georgia because homeowners can use outdoor spaces during much of the year. They provide partial shade during sunny weather while maintaining the airflow and open feeling many homeowners want in a backyard living area.

6. Where does Coastal Hardscapes install pergolas?

Coastal Hardscapes installs pergolas and outdoor living spaces throughout Savannah, Pooler, Richmond Hill, Rincon, Guyton, Port Wentworth, The Landings, Savannah Quarters, Godley Station, and surrounding coastal Georgia communities.

7. Can you add landscaping around my new pergola?

Yes. Coastal Hardscapes can incorporate landscaping and hardscaping around a new pergola and patio. Depending on the backyard design, the surrounding project may include plants, river rock, walkways, turf, retaining walls, fire features, or other outdoor living improvements.

8. Do I need a permit to build a pergola in Savannah or Pooler?

Permit requirements can depend on the pergola’s size, location, design, attachment to the home, and the jurisdiction where the property is located. HOA requirements may also apply in some neighborhoods. The permitting requirements for the specific property should be confirmed before construction begins.
