The Before: An Underused Concrete Patio with Incomplete Landscaping

What you will quickly see in this photo is that the existing “Patio” was more of a landing spot to house a grill, maybe a seat or two, and a rug. The landscaping around the screened-in porch area and concrete patio was mature, but needed pruning and lacked diversity in plant selection.
The view from the existing patio and covered porch areas was spectacular, with the homeowners able to see the Savannah Quarters Golf Course from their backyard. One challenge for this project was the property layout, since it had such limited space in the rear. From the existing patio and covered porch to the property line was just a few steps, meaning our design process for this hardscaping project was going to be vital.
Designing Around the Home, Landscape, and Golf Course

With smaller yards by golf courses becoming more common, this isn’t a huge issue for the team here at Coastal Hardscapes. Working alongside this homeowner, we were able to help create a custom design where we used two elements to make the backyard hard space mor functinal:
- Elevated patios with lights
- Columns
By elevating the patio area and creating a step down to the backyard, along with columns, we distinguished the yard from the house and the patio from the covered porch. We also removed some existing landscaping and mulch beds and replaced them with the living area, giving the yard a refreshed feel.
Hardscaping is often looked at just for sitting, but what many homeonwers don’t realize is that often times hardscaping creates more funcitonal spaces and utilizes the proeprty more efficnetly when you work with a desing to bulid team in Pooler or Savannah like Coastal Hardscapes.
The Transformation: A Custom Paver Patio Built for Outdoor Living

Our top priorities when designing and building a custom hardscape project for homeowners are to balance functionality with aesthetics while keeping the project within your budget. The first issues we noticed with this property were the following:
- Old concrete slab patio
- Overgrown landscaping around the covered screened-in porch area
- Limited space extending past the home
We took these considerations into the design process, and based on our expertise, we recommended removing the existing landsacping and creating a leveled patio for two reasons. For one, the landsacping beyond the property line gave the feeling of a landscaped yard already, while the previous landsacping was overcrowding the yard space.
Second, the elevated patio looks more elegant, and adding garden walls and columns with lighting distinguished the area from the rest of the yard/home. These factors might seem insignificant, but they go a long way when building out the patio and walkway.
A Paver Patio That Complements the Home

When designing this paver patio in Savannah Quarters, we wanted the finished space to feel like a natural extension of the home, not a separate addition. We selected pavers that complemented the home’s exterior colors and used a 3-piece random ashlar paver pattern, which is often called a modular random pattern. This creates a blended, warm feel, and we use it to add texture and a less robotic appearance.
The raised patio also created a smooth transition from the screened-in porch to the backyard. Instead of having a small concrete slab surrounded by landscaping, the homeowners now have a larger, more inviting space for outdoor furniture, entertaining guests, and enjoying their golf course views.
A Side-Yard Paver Walkway That Connects the Property

Another important part of this Savannah Quarters project was creating a functional walkway along the side of the home. Previously, this area was primarily landscaping, which limited how easily the homeowners could move between different parts of their property. The side yard felt unoccupied and wasn’t functional.
We installed a custom paver walkway connecting the side yard to the new patio and following the garden boundary wall toward the back of the property. Using the same pavers and pattern and infusing the walkway area into the patio, we were able to maintain a consistent appearance throughout the project. The walkway also provides a defined walking surface, reducing the need to travel across the lawn while making the entire outdoor space feel more connected.
Custom Seating Walls and Stone Columns Define the Outdoor Space

One of the biggest differences between a basic paver patio and a custom outdoor living space is how the surrounding features are incorporated into the design. For this Westbrook homeowner, we wanted to create a defined patio area without making the backyard feel smaller or blocking the golf course views.
We accomplished this by incorporating low garden walls and stone columns around the patio. These features helped establish the boundaries of the outdoor living area while complementing the elevated paver surface. The combination of pavers, walls, and columns also created a more complete design that looks intentional from both the home and the backyard.
Adding Structure Without Closing Off the Golf Course View

When your backyard overlooks a golf course, maintaining that open view is an important part of the patio design. Tall privacy walls or oversized landscaping can make a smaller backyard feel enclosed and take away from one of the property’s best features.
For this project, we used low-profile garden walls to define the patio while keeping the surrounding landscape visible. The walls create a clear separation between the patio and lawn without completely closing off the outdoor space. This approach allowed us to add structure and visual interest while preserving the open atmosphere that makes golf course properties in Savannah Quarters so appealing.
Stone Columns That Elevate the Entire Design

To finish the patio, we incorporated stone columns with integrated outdoor lighting. These columns serve as architectural accents, helping distinguish the patio from the surrounding lawn while giving the entire project a more polished appearance. In our opinion, this was what made this design truly stand out amongst other patio projects we have completed. Separating spaces in a hardscaping design is a unique way to actually create more functional space in your yard – literally and figuratively.
The lighting was another important consideration. By installing lights directly into the columns, we created subtle illumination around the patio without relying entirely on overhead fixtures or freestanding landscape lights. This makes the patio more inviting during the evening hours and highlights the stonework after sunset. For homeowners who enjoy entertaining or spending time outdoors after dark, integrated hardscape lighting can be a valuable addition to a custom patio design.
Outdoor Patio Lighting That Makes the Space Shine After Sunset

A custom paver patio should be just as inviting in the evening as it is during the day. For this Savannah Quarters project, we incorporated outdoor lighting directly into the stone columns to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere after sunset.
Rather than installing large overhead lights, we used integrated hardscape lighting to highlight the stonework and provide subtle illumination around the patio. This helps homeowners and guests better see the edges of the elevated patio and surrounding steps when enjoying the space at night, which is one of the many perks of living in Savannah – the summer and fall nights!
Why Paver Patios Work Well for Savannah Quarters Homes
We get this question quite often: “Why are paver patios better for the Savannah climate instead of concrete?”
The answer is actually pretty simple: paver patios are a popular choice for homeowners in Savannah Quarters and throughout coastal Georgia because they offer design flexibility, durability, and better use of outdoor space. Whether your property backs up to a golf course or has a smaller backyard, a custom paver patio can complement your home while addressing practical concerns. Concrete, on the other hand, can be problematic (though cheaper at first) because of water runoff, the overall appearance, and cracks. Paver maintenance is easier and more cost-friendly compared to concrete maintenance!
Here are a few reasons we recommend paver patios:
- Design flexibility: Choose from different paver sizes, colors, textures, and patterns to complement your home’s exterior.
- Better use of space: Extend existing patios, replace overcrowded landscaping, or create defined entertaining areas.
- Drainage considerations: Proper grading and base preparation help direct water away from the home and prevent pooling.
- Long-term maintenance: You can replace individual pavers if damaged without removing the entire patio.
- Custom features: Incorporate seating walls, steps, columns, and outdoor lighting into one cohesive design.
- Coastal Georgia conditions: Proper installation and drainage planning help patios withstand heavy rainfall, humidity, and changing soil conditions.

1. How much does a custom paver patio cost in Savannah Quarters, GA?
Custom patio pricing is based on square footage, and that price can range from $15 to $45 per square foot installed. This price depends on paver material selection, labor rates, site preparation, and design complexity. Other features like seating walls, decorative borders, lighting, and drainage solutions increase the overall price but also add outdoor living value to your home.
2. Can you install a paver patio over an existing concrete patio?

3. Can a paver patio include seating walls and outdoor lighting?
With our custom paver patios, we often incorporate built-in seating walls, decorative columns, and low-voltage landscape lighting to create a complete outdoor entertainment space, like the project we highlighted above in Savannah Quarters. During the planning and consultation phase, we can factor in elements like lighting and pergolas so we can plan accordingly during installation.
